Closing the gender project conference
DCAF, in close cooperation with the Gender Consultative Committee (GCC) and the Ministry of Interior, conducted a closing conference at the Ankars Suites and Hotel in Ramallah. Representatives from the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, the Council of Ministers, the GCC, aecid, civil society and the media attended the conference. The closing event launched the “Guidelines on integrating gender equality into the policies, plans and programmes of Palestinian security institutions” in English and Arabic, and put an official end to the current phase of the gender project. Mr. Jordi Galbe Lopez, Senior Programme Manager at aecid, illustrated that these guidelines are a crucial start to achieving gender equality within the Palestinian security forces and ensuring that security services recognise and respond to the needs of all citizens. Colonel Dr. Wahid Jumma, from the Ministry of Interior, stated that integrating gender concepts into the security forces is of upmost importance to the State of Palestine. Ala Badarneh, a civil society representative from Hurriyat, expressed his appreciation for the project which gave civil society access to information on efforts to mainstream gender in the security forces and allowed the GCC, CSOs and the media to discuss the topic from different angles. DCAF Ramallah concluded the conference by illustrating that applying the guidelines will ensure that the State of Palestine fulfills its commitment to achieve gender equality and meets its obligations under the international human rights treaties they have signed up to, such as CEDAW.
